How Juvéderm works
Every Juvéderm filler is a clear, smooth gel made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural sugar your skin already contains. In the skin, HA holds on to water to keep it hydrated and plump and acts as a cushion. As we age, we lose HA, and skin starts to fold and sag.
Injected beneath a line or into an area that has lost volume, Juvéderm adds that cushion back for an immediate, natural-looking result. Its smooth gel flows easily into the skin, and each product contains a small amount of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to make treatment more comfortable.

Juvéderm® Ultra XC
A versatile gel for contouring and smoothing moderate facial wrinkles and folds, including smile lines and lines around the mouth.
Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC
A more robust formulation for deeper folds and moderate-to-severe wrinkles. Most patients need one treatment, with results lasting about a year.
Juvéderm® Voluma® XC
Designed to add volume beneath the skin, lifting and contouring flattened cheeks and adding definition to the chin and jawline.
Voluma XC: lift for the cheeks
Wrinkles aren't the only sign of aging. Over time, the cheeks naturally lose volume and flatten, and the skin can begin to sag. This is called age-related midface volume loss.
Voluma XC is placed deeper beneath the skin to restore that volume, gently lifting and contouring the cheeks. It can also improve a receding chin and add definition along the jawline, for a balanced, refreshed profile.
What to expect
- Free consultationWe review your medical history, discuss your goals, and choose the right Juvéderm product, or combination, for each area.
- TreatmentThe gel is injected with a fine needle or cannula. Thanks to the built-in lidocaine, most patients find it very tolerable. Treatment usually takes 15–45 minutes.
- Right afterResults are visible immediately. Redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising at the injection sites is common and usually resolves within about 1–2 weeks (2–4 weeks for Voluma).
- Lasting resultsUltra XC and Ultra Plus XC typically last about a year; Voluma XC can last up to about two years in the cheeks. Touch-ups maintain your look.
Before your treatment
- Tell us if you're taking aspirin, ibuprofen, blood thinners or supplements that increase bleeding; they can increase bruising
- Tell us about any history of severe allergies, allergy to lidocaine, or excessive scarring (keloids)
- Let us know if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, on immune-suppressing therapy, or planning laser treatments or chemical peels
Aftercare
- Avoid strenuous exercise, extensive sun or heat, and alcohol for the first 24 hours
- Don't massage or press on the treated area unless we've told you to
- Cold compresses can help with swelling
- Call us right away about unusual pain, skin color changes, or any vision changes
Frequently asked questions
Will people be able to tell?
When it's done well, people notice you look refreshed without being able to tell why. Our goal is always a soft, natural result, never an overfilled look.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients need only one treatment to achieve their desired correction, with an optional touch-up a few weeks later.
What are the possible side effects?
The most common side effects are temporary injection-site reactions such as redness, swelling, pain or tenderness, firmness, small lumps, bruising, discoloration and itching. These are usually mild to moderate and short-lasting. As with any injection, there's a small risk of infection.
Are there any serious risks?
A rare but serious risk with any facial filler is accidental injection into a blood vessel, which can cause vision problems, blindness, stroke, scabs or permanent scarring. This is why it's so important to choose an experienced medical provider who knows facial anatomy. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved quickly if needed.
Who shouldn't have Juvéderm?
Juvéderm shouldn't be used if you have a history of severe allergies or anaphylaxis, or an allergy to lidocaine or to the bacterial proteins used in manufacturing. Its safety hasn't been established during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We'll review your full history at your consultation.
