Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion, also known as particle resurfacing (and by names like Power Peel, Derma Peel and Parisian Peel), is a gentle skin-polishing treatment we perform in our office. It clears away dull, dead surface skin to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion, and it takes only 20–30 minutes.

How it works

A handheld device sprays a fine stream of tiny crystals (aluminum oxide or soda crystals) across the skin, and at the same time gently vacuums away the used crystals together with dirt and dead surface skin.

Removing that dull outer layer leaves skin feeling smoother and looking brighter, and helps your skincare products absorb better. Regular treatments also encourage healthy cell turnover.

It's often called a "lunchtime peel" because a full-face treatment takes only 20–30 minutes. It can also be used on the neck and chest.

What it helps with

  • Dull, tired-looking skin
  • Rough or uneven texture
  • Fine lines
  • Clogged and enlarged-looking pores, blackheads
  • Mild acne scars and post-acne marks
  • Mild sun damage and uneven skin tone

Safe for all skin tones. Unlike some exfoliating treatments, it won't lighten or darken darker skin.

Your visit

What to expect

  1. Free consultationWe look at your skin and goals and make sure microdermabrasion is the right fit, or whether it should be combined with another treatment.
  2. TreatmentYour skin is cleansed, then the handpiece is passed over the area. It isn't painful; most people feel only a light tingling, and no anesthesia is needed. A full face takes about 20–30 minutes.
  3. Right afterYour skin may look slightly pink. The mild redness can be covered with makeup right away and usually fades on its own within an hour or two.
  4. Your treatment seriesFor best results, 5–10 treatments spaced 7–10 days apart are recommended. Most patients see clear improvement by the fourth or fifth session.
  5. MaintenanceAfter the initial series, periodic maintenance treatments, from once a month to once every 3 months as needed, help keep your skin glowing.

Before your treatment

  • Avoid waxing, depilatory creams and harsh exfoliants on the area for a few days beforehand
  • Let us know if you use retinoids or other strong skincare, or have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) recently
  • Arrive with clean skin if possible

Aftercare

  • Apply a gentle moisturizer and a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) daily
  • Skip scrubs, peels and retinoids for a couple of days
  • Makeup can be worn right away if you like
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure while your skin settles

Frequently asked questions

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

No. Most patients describe a light tingling or a gentle sanding sensation. No anesthesia is needed, and you can go straight back to work or your day.

When will I see results?

Skin often looks fresher and brighter right after the first visit. More lasting improvement in texture and tone builds over the series, and most patients see clear results by the fourth or fifth session.

Is it safe for darker skin?

Yes. Microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin tones and won't lighten or darken darker skin, as some other exfoliating treatments can.

Who shouldn't have it?

It may not be suitable during an active acne breakout, a rosacea flare, with open sores, sunburn or certain skin conditions, or shortly after isotretinoin treatment. We'll review this with you at your free consultation.

Can I combine it with other treatments?

Yes. Microdermabrasion works well as part of a broader plan with photo rejuvenation, Fractora or injectables. We'll help you plan the right combination.
