A small beam of light makes the difference. Spider veins are thin, reddish purple veins that are visible on the legs. They are usually clustered on the thigh or below the knee. Spider veins, or telangiecstasias, affect as many as 80% of all woman as they grow older, and also affect a large percentage of men. This is generic for the most part, although other causes are pregnancy, childbirth, use of birth-control pills, estrogen replacement therapy, previous injury, and the use of corticosteroids. Spider veins are usually not a medical problem, but they may cause embarrassment and the reluctance to wear shorts or swimming suits. In years past, there was very little that could be done to remove spider veins. Now, with the use of laser, Sheepshead Bay Laser Center can virtually erase the problem.
Leg telangiecstasias are not varicose veins or deep veins. They are superficial veins that have become permanently dilated. One treatment is electrodessication, which involves forcing the vein shut with electrical current. Another treatment called sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the vein to force it to close.
